Ryan is the second or third son, who knows which, of the Lancaster line, which at one time ruled over the Andascan city-state of Calabria. Ryan's eldest brother, Tristan, and twin brother Sandalio, are the only known survivors of the gassing of Calabria's tunnels. They got lucky and managed to escape the city-state before the dysphoria gas got to them enough to kill them, but Sandalio and Ryan still managed to inhale enough to be slowly dying ever since.
They were adopted by Izumi, a fox-Other with several tails that runs the Black Market out of Pyxis, and were thus raised in Pyxis. Izumi has an uncle, Killian, who they also have adopted as their uncle, and despite having lost so much, they've at least always had one another, and love.
Ryan shortly after reaching the age of majority became an officer of the United Republic. Now, most would tell him he's up out his damn mind, and he's heard it a few times, from Izumi, from Killian, from Suyis... but he knows what he wants and always had. If he was going to die anyway, then he was going to take the Republic down too. Even if he wasn't alive to see them fall, he'd orchestrate their end somehow.
And he learned to do so by learning their most powerful weapons; the airships. He can now purposely destroy an airship from the ground, let alone in the pilot seat of another ship, and has been working very covertly to try and release as many losrians and part-bloods as possible. Most have died, instead, all but one who now lives in the Tiernan Wood.
Ryan discovered a pixie following him around about six years ago. This turned out to be Daena, Ryan's Other, and while it's dangerous, Ryan couldn't exactly tell her to go away, so they've been keeping their heads down in the Republic together. Ryan does his best to keep her hidden, because he doesn't know if the Republic will decide they don't care or not, but he won't take chances of them not.
By chance, he met and befriended a losrian named Axel, and something about Axel got him hook line and sinker. Probably the guy's innate charm that somehow never manages to be too much. Whether he likes it or not, he's fallen mad in love with him, and will probably never fall back out. And it's just as well, because Axel's an Alpha-rated losrian, in danger of being terminated any second, and Ryan's dying from dysphoria.
Ryan's given up on figuring something out with it. He's just focusing on living the life he does have. It seems Sandalio decided to do the same, and it's Tristan that decided to go try fighting dysphoria. If it makes him happy. In the meantime, Ryan's trying to pass on as much as he can about the weaknesses of the Republic that he's learned, before it's too late to.
