Jahan and his older brother Jadyka probably had parents at some point. What they can't tell you is what point, what their names were, how they died, anything. Jahan remembers even less than Jadyka does, and by this point has decided that it doesn't matter and he doesn't need to remember. It's easier that way anyhow.
The brothers ran in the streets, getting by on stealing and whatever else they could think up. Eventually Jadyka started fighting in the HoloArena, much to Jahan's chagrin, but he insisted it was necessary. In time, though, Jadyka met and befriended an odd bird-like Other, red and white in color, and while Jahan didn't think they had the resources to be feeding and nursing this Other back to health, Jadyka insisted. Jahan had to take over duties of bringing the bird some food, because Jadyka had taken too much damage in the arena, once or twice, and once the bird even asked about it.
So Jahan told it the truth, about the HoloArena and how it operated, and that they were orphans that had no other choice. The bird didn't seem to much like that, but didn't ask many questions. Later, the bird wasn't where they'd left him, but he came back later, and weirdly, turned humanoid. That was a surprise trick they didn't know he could do.
And so was born Suyis Maitra, the current reigning HoloArena champion. As Suyis was an Other, and a powerful one, he had far less issue nabbing wins in the arena, without a sponsor, too. He used the money to adopt them, register them both, and then built Suyis Corps, the first and currently the only airship company. Whether the Republic admits it or not, Suyis' monopoly on airship parts and technology means he's got them by the balls, because he controls their strongest weapon, and frankly, knowing what Jahan knows about the bird, he wouldn't be surprised if Suyis literally controlled all the airships under Republic command somehow.
Jahan decided to join the Republic, though it was begrudgingly. He isn't fond of them, and never was. Jadyka later imploded and Suyis managed to save him with daeni parts. Jahan decided to be augmented with daeni technology later to prolong his lifespan and prevent him from dying on Jadyka too early. Nowadays, Jahan spends most of his time anywhere but the tower in Eridanus, because frankly, he hates Eridanus. He much prefers Suyis' tower. He'll also visit the Outlands, though he goes around the Tiernan Wood, over the sea, because it's creepy and he doesn't know that he wants to bank on the Wood always letting him pass.
