Like too many in the Dome, Dante was born at a disadvantage. Not a financial one, no; the Lins are powerful and wealthy, and his parents are no exception, both very important to the Dome, one a teacher at Erebos University, and the other a high-ranking Republic official in the Communications department. Instead, Dante was born at a physical disadvantage, and though his parents never did figure out what had caused it, they do know he developed a sort of muscular atrophy that seemed to operate somewhat similarly to cerebral palsy, as well.
Most in similar positions end up part of the Special Other Forces, and nobody asks, exactly, and Dante knew this. He expected to end up a part-blood, but somehow his parents managed to pull some strings and instead he got sent to the Engineering department. As it happens, Dante was saved by none other than Suyis Lucain, who is now a Beta Prime. Suyis decided to use daeni technology to reinforce Dante's body where it was weakened, and while there are still bad days, Dante does alright for himself now.
Dante later went through and graduated from Erebos University, actually a bit sooner than is typically expected because he has, and has always had, a voracious appetite for information and knowledge. Not long after graduating, he decided to join the United Republic, and became a part of the Engineering department. His parents weren't surprised; though somewhat disappointed, as they'd hoped he'd do something unrelated. But then, this is Dante, and Dante's like that.
When his cousin, Jesse, decided to join the Medical department, Dante had questions, because everyone knows that boy don't play the game right. Jesse's too nice, and generally didn't blindly agree with the Republic and its methods and it's going to get him killed someday. But hey, he's in good company. All the Lins are like this.
Turns out another cousin, Aren, decided to become a handler to save some kid he met in Pyxis and oh, lord. Currently, Dante's the only one behaving. And that's really debatable because he hangs with the Air Fleet instead of his department and unit, but Suyis ain't bit his head off yet, so whatever.
