Tall and bulky, describe Axel quite well. He's got vibrant blue eyes, that always seem to be laughing, and his short hair's kept a very bright, almost offensive, shade of hot pink. Why, no one really knows. He's slightly tanned, by default, but he does get darker in sunlight. There's also a tattoo of a lion on his left inner wrist and he doesn't remember getting it or why he did.
Though he mostly doesn't remember as much, Axel, born Ian Mikhail Vasilyev, is a son of Gibraltar, and if one knows what they're looking at, it's obvious. He talks to ghosts about as much as he talks to living people, and often has trouble telling them apart at first glance. It takes a few interactions before he figures out he's holding a conversation with a dead guy.
The only bright side is, he's a Republic-controlled Losrian, and nobody pays any fucking attention to him, anyway.
His family, he assumes, weren't very important, but he's actually descended from the Warlords that ruled Gibraltar for three or four generations. Axel would've been the current Warlord if Gibraltar hadn't fallen, but that's part the tale we're telling and part another one. Ultimately, he and his father Viktor and mother were one of the clusters of survivors, and they moved as far away from the wreckage as possible. (When you can see dead things as easily as breathing, you don't want to hang around death-places.) Axel barely remembers that. But honestly, Axel barely remembers anything.
In the end, they scraped by in Pyxis for a good long time. His dad may or may not've taken part in the HoloArena's sport, if only because it was a good source of income (as was, and still is, the Black Market whose presence is strong in Pyxis). Ian started spending his time helping farmers with market stalls protect their crop from would-be thieves, and he earned a decent amount of caps that way. He met and befriended, and at some point fell in love with, Aren Lin that way, too.
Unfortunately, their peace wasn't to last. Some time after Brian was born, their mother was shot down by a Republic soldier, probably falsely assumed she was a threat; or was just a bigoted jerk, who knows. Ian and Viktor tag-teamed raising him for a while, and then Viktor didn't come home one day. Ian hung around for a bit, but after a few tense run-ins with Republic soldiers here and there, he eventually decided to take Brian and go beyond the Char. The Republic sure as shit wasn't going to follow them past the Tiernan Wood.
That forest really is freaky, for the record. It decided to let them pass, though, and Ian and Brian started making a life in the Outlands.
It turns out, the Outlands aren't as damaged and inhospitable as the Republic likes to make it sound. Actually, it was much easier to get things to grow out there than it is in many places in the Dome. Eventually, Ian joined an Outlander Band, and last he heard, Brian had joined the same one, partially for the help, and partially for the companionship. It wasn't much longer before Ian was captured by the Republic.
Since then, he's gone through a huge number of handlers. Ian, now going by Axel partially because he can't remember his name, isn't one to behave, and frankly he never has been, so no one should be surprised. He's steadily risen through the danger ratings to the point he's now an Alpha rating and he's on his last legs. If he doesn't find a way of getting along with his handler and quick, that's it, no more Axel.
It's his own fault. He's the one that makes less-than-decent handlers regret ever setting foot in the same room as that one alpha-rated Losrian.
Most of the time, he doesn't remember having a family. Sometimes, he almost remembers Brian, and then, he forgets again. As it stands, he and a handler that is not his own, also a Losrian, by the name of Ryan Thomas, have been dating off and on for about a year. Axel's most recently gotten a new handler, a greenie by the name of Aren, and the name sounds like he should know who that is, but he doesn't.
Time will tell if it's a waste of time or not.
